History of HM Gunboat William HM Gunboat William was an innovative vessel designed for anti-invasion duties during the late 18th century. Under the direction of Sir Sidney Smith, the ship was fitted as a hoy-rigged gunboat at Plymouth Yard. Armed with a 24pdr cannon, 2x12pdr carronades, and a crew of 25 men, this gunboat was built for versatility and firepower. Its unique feature was the turret mounting for the 24pdr cannon, which allowed the cannon to rotate on a flat forecastle, a design ahead of its time. Although the Gunboat William was capable of sailing with its fore-and-aft rig, it was primarily rowed, with rowlocks and oars clearly visible as part of the ship’s design. The mast itself was mounted on a pivot, enabling it to be lowered to reduce resistance and improve maneuverability under oar power. Built for rapid deployment in times of crisis, HM Gunboat William played a key role in the Royal Navy’s defense strategies.
